Putting a Starved Rock Spin on the Amazing Race

(Utica, IL) – Starved Rock Lodge will put its own twist on the Amazing Race this summer. Fans of reality television are probably familiar with the format of the Amazing Race but Starved Rock Lodge has taken that format and given it their own touch by integrating the historic charm of Starved Rock State Park, Lodge and the surrounding area. Participants will enjoy the opportunity to work as a team to solve what Activities Director, Edna Daugherty describes as “devious puzzles.” Edna’s inspiration for The Amazing Race – Starved Rock Style comes, of course from the television show but also from her own experience as a racer during a recent vacation. “Using the Lodge, Park and surrounding communities as the setting for the race allows us to capitalize on all that is Starved Rock,” says Edna. Teams will compete in pairs and will need a vehicle for at least one leg of the race. Participants will be provided with a Starved Rock backpack, bottle of water, a snack and at the end a complimentary beverage.

Without giving away too much information about the race, Daugherty assures participants of a great day outdoors with physical and puzzle solving challenges for all! This one day race is most appropriate for participants over the age of eight, so moms & dads can choose this event as something to look forward to on a summer Sunday afternoon. The Amazing Race – Starved Rock Style is just one of many new events and activities offered at the Lodge for summer 2013. Visit the Lodge website (http://www.starvedrocklodge.com) for more information.

The Amazing Race – Starved Rock Style will be run on select Sundays from May through September. Choose from May 26, June 2 or 23, July 7 or 21, August 4 or 25, and September 1 or 15 as your race date. Advance reservations are required for the race and an overnight stay package is also available. Racers should contact the Activities Department at 815-220-7386 to book their team’s place in The Race!

NEW PERMANENT EXHIBITION

The Universe: A Walk through Space and Time Ongoing Presented in the Pritzker Hall of Cosmology

How large is the Universe? Where did it come from? Are we alone? Explore the answers to these big questions in The Universe: A Walk through Space and Time, a new, interactive exhibition. In The Universe, visitors will experience how the Universe evolved over 13.7 billion years – from the Big Bang to modern day. As they travel through time, immersive media shows visitors how galaxies, stars, planets – and even the very atoms in their bodies – were created as the Universe grew. A spectacular projection showcases the vast enormity of the Universe itself, traveling through regions farther than our Solar System–transporting visitors billions of light-years from Earth to the edge of the cosmos, while touch screen technology allows them to investigate the diverse and beautiful objects of deep space. Using interactive stations in the exhibition, visitors can send e-postcards to themselves from the Orion Nebula, Neptune, the Andromeda galaxy, and the Coma Cluster of galaxies. The e-postcards will travel at the speed of light, so visitors will have to wait about 2.5 million years for their postcard to arrive from the Andromeda galaxy but only four hours for a postcard from Neptune. To learn more and plan your next space adventure, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.

The Adler Planetarium gratefully acknowledges the Pritzker Foundation for its leadership in promoting space science education at the Adler Planetarium.

SPACE SHOWS

Undiscovered Worlds
Continuing through December 31, 2013
Definiti Space Theater

Through the discovery of exoplanets — the hundreds of planets that have been found orbiting stars beyond the Sun — we have learned that our Solar System is not alone in the Universe, and we have had to redefine our understanding of planets and solar systems. With new achievements like the Kepler Telescope and rapidly improving technology, the discovery of exoplanets puts us one step closer to the possibility of finding an Earth-like world. How will this change how we view our place in the Universe? For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.

3D Sun
Continuing through December 31, 2013
Universe Theater

3D Sun gives audiences the chance to see the Sun up close in dazzling, high-definition 3D. Stand above the Arctic Circle and witness the most brilliant auroras on Earth. Take a ride on a solar blast from the Sun’s surface to Earth’s Magnetosphere. Witness the most powerful explosions in the solar system–equal to the force of a billion megaton nuclear bombs. In October 2006, NASA launched twin spacecraft from a single rocket in Florida–spacecraft that would, for the first time in the history of space exploration, capture space-born, high-definition 3D images of the Sun. In 3D Sun, the leading NASA scientists from the mission unveil these images and take us behind the scenes to tell the story of the Sun and why it is of crucial importance to all of us. Big Bird, Elmo and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, take viewers on a tour of the night sky to learn about the Big Dipper, the North Star, the Sun and the Moon. With Big Bird’s help, they return to Earth and celebrate that Elmo can see the same stars on Sesame Street that Hu Hu Zhu sees in China. The planetarium show, which is presented on an all-digital, 360º screen, is designed for young children. One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure was created as part of a global partnership between the Adler, Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, the Beijing Planetarium and the Liberty Science Center (Jersey City, NJ). His repertoire includes more than fifty roles, and he holds the distinction of being the most recorded bass in history. His more than eighty recordings have garnered nearly every major award, and his exposure on television and video is no less impressive. Chicago, The Hidden City

April 13, 2013 |

Chicago Ganster Tours

The allure of Chicago has never been the flashing lights of New York, or the warm air of California, the allure has always been within it’s hidden secrets, hidden opportunities, hidden entrances, its hidden city. A city where during the 1920’s was known for its limitless underground parties, booze, and violence that snuck up onto the streets through the shadows of prohibition. It was during prohibition that the Chicago gangs took over the streets, their violent faces hidden behind their slick suits, innovative fashion, elite parties, and their family man demeanor. During this time Chicago became a hidden map of history, with a trail of whisky leaving a path that we can trace today.

Al Capone, was one of the most infamous gangsters of Chicago: vicious, savvy, alluring, and one of the most spiffy men in town. His violence gave him a name, but his business genius, and fashion, painted his image for most people on his good side. For those who were on his bad side, blood painted the picture instead. The violence that Al and his outfit created backhandedly lead to Al Capone taking over the city, both in regards to crime, as well as politics. This created an era that still whispers through the city streets, and buildings of Chicago. It is a hidden story of booze, glamour, jewels, and guns, one that is still trying to be told today.

The truth of the matter is, though this was the most brutal time in Chicago’s history, it was also the building blocks of a culture. Businessmen looked at the suave of the transactions that took place, and how business done with a suit and cigar seemed to hold power, that not all had within their grasp. The birth of celebrities within the suits, the roar of the flashy cars, the snapping of bubbles within champagne, all were given a new look during this time. The glamour, the booze, and of course, the jazz, issuing through every underground establishment, created the secret talents of the city, the hidden talents of the era.

Every building of Chicago holds a story within, and even the walls facing the streets hold a story that can be found if one has the right key. One can get the key through tours such as, Absolutely Chicago Seway Tours. The segways are so quiet that you can actually hear the footsteps of the gangsters who walked the streets before. And as you pass by the old speakeasies, you can hear the jazz, the laughter, even the rolling of the dice upon the gambling tables. The 1920’s bore the beginning of an era, and allure that still is within the culture of Chicago today. This was the start of the fashion, and parties, but also the organized crime families in Chicago. The hidden city, where everything has a password, every building has a story.
