NEW IMMERSIVE SPACE EXPERIENCE
Cosmic Wonder
Opening May 17, 2013
Presented in the Grainger Sky Theater, the most technologically advanced theater in the world.
“Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis for man’s desire to understand.”-Neil Armstrong
This summer, take an exciting journey of discovery as the world’s most technologically advanced dome theater transforms into a virtual observatory in Cosmic Wonder, opening Friday, May 17, 2013, at Chicago’s Adler Planetarium. Throughout time, humans have connected with the cosmos in an ongoing cycle of wonder, observation, and discovery. In Cosmic Wonder, visitors are invited to look up! The night sky reveals the mysteries of our Universe in the most immersive space environment ever created. As we observe and form an understanding of our cosmos, leading-edge technology allows audiences to experience the night sky like never before, bringing the Universe to you. Witness the breathtaking beauty of the Crab Nebula as it descends, coming so close you can almost touch it. Zoom into Orion the Hunter and become bathed in a hotbed of active star formation. Zero in on a small patch of the night sky as you are surrounded by the Hubble Extreme Deep Field image containing more than 5,500 galaxies. Presented as a live show, Cosmic Wonder tells the compelling story of how, through time, we have pieced together an understanding of the cosmos, inviting audiences to ask questions and help scientists unlock modern mysteries of the unknown.

NEW PERMANENT EXHIBITION
The Universe: A Walk through Space and Time Ongoing Presented in the Pritzker Hall of Cosmology
How large is the Universe? Where did it come from? Are we alone? Explore the answers to these big questions in The Universe: A Walk through Space and Time, a new, interactive exhibition. In The Universe, visitors will experience how the Universe evolved over 13.7 billion years – from the Big Bang to modern day. As they travel through time, immersive media shows visitors how galaxies, stars, planets – and even the very atoms in their bodies – were created as the Universe grew. A spectacular projection showcases the vast enormity of the Universe itself, traveling through regions farther than our Solar System–transporting visitors billions of light-years from Earth to the edge of the cosmos, while touch screen technology allows them to investigate the diverse and beautiful objects of deep space. Using interactive stations in the exhibition, visitors can send e-postcards to themselves from the Orion Nebula, Neptune, the Andromeda galaxy, and the Coma Cluster of galaxies. The e-postcards will travel at the speed of light, so visitors will have to wait about 2.5 million years for their postcard to arrive from the Andromeda galaxy but only four hours for a postcard from Neptune. To learn more and plan your next space adventure, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
The Adler Planetarium gratefully acknowledges the Pritzker Foundation for its leadership in promoting space science education at the Adler Planetarium.
IMMERSIVE SPACE EXPERIENCE
Welcome to the Universe
Continuing through May 3, 2013
Presented in the Grainger Sky Theater, the most technologically advanced theater in the world.
Take a mind-blowing tour of the Universe like no other at the Adler Planetarium. Welcome to the Universe is the next adventure departing from the Grainger Sky Theater. Audiences travel a billion light-years and back flying through space, orbiting the Moon, zooming into a canyon on Mars, and soaring through the cosmic web where a million galaxies shower down on them. Then it’s back to Earth, traveling faster than the speed of light in the most immersive space experience ever created. For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
SPACE SHOWS
Undiscovered Worlds
Continuing through December 31, 2013
Definiti Space Theater
Through the discovery of exoplanets — the hundreds of planets that have been found orbiting stars beyond the Sun — we have learned that our Solar System is not alone in the Universe, and we have had to redefine our understanding of planets and solar systems. With new achievements like the Kepler Telescope and rapidly improving technology, the discovery of exoplanets puts us one step closer to the possibility of finding an Earth-like world. How will this change how we view our place in the Universe? For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
3D Sun
Continuing through December 31, 2013
Universe Theater
3D Sun gives audiences the chance to see the Sun up close in dazzling, high-definition 3D. Stand above the Arctic Circle and witness the most brilliant auroras on Earth. Take a ride on a solar blast from the Sun’s surface to Earth’s Magnetosphere. Witness the most powerful explosions in the solar system–equal to the force of a billion megaton nuclear bombs. In October 2006, NASA launched twin spacecraft from a single rocket in Florida–spacecraft that would, for the first time in the history of space exploration, capture space-born, high-definition 3D images of the Sun. In 3D Sun, the leading NASA scientists from the mission unveil these images and take us behind the scenes to tell the story of the Sun and why it is of crucial importance to all of us. For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
Night Sky Live!
Ongoing
Definiti Space Theater
Take an in-depth journey through our Solar System, the constellations and more in Night Sky Live! With the help of modern exploration and observing techniques, this show gives the audience a deeper look at the sometimes strange, and often breathtakingly-beautiful, diversity of objects that make up our Universe. The show was created by the Adler Planetarium to reflect our ever-changing understanding of the Universe and our place in it. For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
Space Junk 3D
Continuing through December 31, 2013
Universe Theater
What goes up doesn’t always come down. Fifty years after launching our dreams into space, we’re left with a troubling legacy: a growing ring of orbital debris that threatens the safety of Earth’s orbits. Space Junk 3D is a visually explosive journey of discovery that weighs the solutions aimed at restoring our planet’s orbits. In Space Junk 3D, visitors experience mind-boggling collisions – both natural and man-made – in stunning time lapse sequences captured with the magical imagery of 3D. Soar from the stunning depths of Arizona’s Meteor Crater to an unprecedented view of our increasingly crowded orbits – 22,000 miles above Earth. For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure Ongoing Definiti Space Theater
This original planetarium show is based on the popular children’s show Sesame Street. Big Bird, Elmo and their friend from China, Hu Hu Zhu, take viewers on a tour of the night sky to learn about the Big Dipper, the North Star, the Sun and the Moon. Elmo and Hu Hu Zhu want to learn more about the Moon, so they take an imaginary trip there and realize that it is very different from Earth. With Big Bird’s help, they return to Earth and celebrate that Elmo can see the same stars on Sesame Street that Hu Hu Zhu sees in China. The planetarium show, which is presented on an all-digital, 360º screen, is designed for young children. One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure was created as part of a global partnership between the Adler, Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind Sesame Street, the Beijing Planetarium and the Liberty Science Center (Jersey City, NJ). For more information, call 312.922.7827 or visit www.adlerplanetarium.org.
